WHEREAS, William H. Mastbrook, a brave veteran, an influential educator, and a respected member of the Prince William County community, died on November 12, 2012; and WHEREAS, a native of Washington, D.C., William "Bill" Mastbrook learned the value of hard work and responsibility during the Great Depression, taking several jobs while in high school; and WHEREAS, during World War II, Bill Mastbrook courageously joined many of the other young men of his generation by volunteering to serve in the United States Armed Forces; he served with the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater until his honorable discharge; and WHEREAS, after returning to the United States, Bill Mastbrook graduated from American University and began a long, successful career as a language teacher at schools throughout Northern Virginia; and WHEREAS, later earning a master's degree from Virginia Tech, Bill Mastbrook provided countless students with the skills they needed to achieve success in a globalized world; he also assisted the United States Department of State by teaching English to foreign professionals working with the department; and WHEREAS, an expert on the breeding and development of purebred dogs, Bill Mastbrook operated his own kennel and was known nationally for his work; and WHEREAS, dedicated to the betterment of Prince William County, Bill Mastbrook was involved with the prestigious Prince William Committee of 100, continued to serve the public education system in an advisory role after his retirement, and devoted a great deal of his time to the promotion of the arts; and WHEREAS, predeceased by his partner, M. Dale Hooper, Bill Mastbrook will be greatly missed by many family members, friends, and fellow Northern Virginians; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of William H. Mastbrook, a respected veteran, a devoted educator, and an active member of the Prince William County community; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William H. Mastbrook as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
