WHEREAS, Murray J. Janus, an admired attorney who made many contributions to the legal community in Richmond, died on January 26, 2013; and WHEREAS, a member of the first graduating class of Douglas S. Freeman High School in 1956, Murray Janus earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law; and WHEREAS, for 50 years, Murray Janus practiced law, building a reputation as a fierce criminal defense attorney with a tireless work ethic, genuine commitment to his clients, and vast knowledge of the law; and WHEREAS, a pillar of the legal community, Murray Janus mentored young attorneys and served as the president of many different bar associations, including the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the John Marshall American Inn of Court; and WHEREAS, despite a rigorous work schedule, Murray Janus also took an active role in community affairs and the Jewish community on the local, state, and national level; and WHEREAS, Murray Janus served as president of the Nuremberg Courtroom Committee of the Virginia Holocaust Museum and as a national commissioner of the Anti-Defamation League; and WHEREAS, known for his collegial manner, dignified professionalism, and love of the law, Murray Janus served as an inspiring role model for countless attorneys and greatly influenced the legal community; and WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Murray Janus will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Shelly; daughters, Laurie and Beth, and their families; stepsons, Stephen, Kenneth, and Sam, and their families; and many other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected attorney, Murray J. Janus; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Murray J. Janus as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
