Celebrating the life of Colonel Andrew Todd.

WHEREAS, Colonel Andrew Todd, a revered teacher, coach, and administrator who molded the character of countless young men at Hargrave Military Academy, died on January 19, 2011; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Colonel Todd proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, continuing his affiliation after his active service as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves and National Guard; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Todd began his association with Hargrave Military Academy in 1946 as an eighth grade math and science teacher and coach; over the years, he served the Academy in a variety of positions including military department head, commandant of cadets, director of athletics and transportation, business manager, interim president, and alumni director and liaison; and

WHEREAS, respected by the cadets for his firm hand and kind heart, Colonel Todd mentored countless youth during their formative years, instilling in them a strong sense of integrity and helping shape them into men who would go forth and serve their communities and country; and

WHEREAS, during his almost 45 years of service, Colonel Todd worked diligently to uphold the strong traditions of Hargrave Military Academy that prepare young men who are "Strong in Mind and Strong in Body"; and

WHEREAS, a leader in the local community as well, Colonel Todd served as a member of the Chatham Town Council from 1963 - 1986 and as mayor from 1980 - 1986, where he endeavored to meet local residents' needs through an efficient and effective local government; and

WHEREAS, a man of strong principles and great faith, Colonel Todd was a longtime member of Chatham Baptist Church, where he served his fellow members as a deacon and a clerk; he was also a moderator of the Pittsylvania Baptist Association; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Todd lived a life marked by humble service to others, whose influence created an enduring legacy that others may strive to emulate; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Colonel Todd will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, Elsie; children, Susan and Stuart and their families, including three grandchildren; and his numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an esteemed citizen of the Commonwealth, Colonel Andrew Todd; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Colonel Andrew Todd as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
