Commending Dr. Heisung Lee.

WHEREAS, Dr. Heisung Lee, founder and longtime executive director of the Korean Central Senior Center in Centreville, whose efforts in support of Northern Virginia's senior citizens have touched countless lives, is retiring; and

WHEREAS, Heisung Lee came to the United States in 1971 for an internship in dietetics and for 35 years worked at hospitals in Richmond and Fairfax County; and

WHEREAS, Heisung Lee developed an interest in how people age, which led her to pursue a master's degree in gerontology from George Mason University and a doctorate in public and community health education from the University of Maryland; and

WHEREAS, while completing her degree and serving as a Korean language interpreter at a senior center in Alexandria, Heisung Lee was inspired to start a senior recreational program at her church, Korean Central Presbyterian Church in Centreville; and

WHEREAS, in 1996, Heisung Lee finished school and became actively involved with the senior program at Korean Central Presbyterian Church, drawing hundreds of attendees from across the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, under Heisung Lee's direction, what is known today as the Korean Central Senior Center offers its visitors meals, recreational opportunities, and classes in English, fitness, health, music, art, calligraphy, computer technology, and more; and

WHEREAS, Heisung Lee's vision has created a place in which thousands have been able to gather to meet friends and become more connected to their communities, contributing greatly to their quality of life; and

WHEREAS, Heisung Lee established a Korean Meals on Wheels program that has supported the health and well-being of many and a training program in partnership with the Inova Health System that has helped more than 1,000 members of the Korean-American community to become personal care or certified nurse aides; and

WHEREAS, Heisung Lee guided the Korean Central Senior Center through the COVID-19 pandemic, developing social media and virtual programs to help her members stay engaged with their community; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her extraordinary accomplishments at the Korean Central Senior Center, Heisung Lee was presented the Andrus Award for Community Service by AARP in 2022; and

WHEREAS, with great care and compassion, Heisung Lee has made a positive and transformative impact on an untold number of people and has provided a shining example of what one can achieve when they answer the call to serve; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Dr. Heisung Lee on the occasion of her retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Heisung Lee as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her contributions to the Commonwealth and best wishes for a rewarding and fulfilling retirement.
