WHEREAS, the Oakton High School football team topped a 9 - 4 regular season by winning the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Northern Region championship; and WHEREAS, the Oakton Cougars shrewdly made the post-season adjustments necessary to achieve three upsets against Lake Braddock Secondary School, Centreville, and the undefeated No. 1 seed Westfield; and WHEREAS, in addition to securing their fourth regional title since 2002, and in a testament to the resolve of the entire team and staff, the No. 7 seed Cougars also became the lowest seed to win the title; and WHEREAS, the offense resorted to smash mouth football in the playoffs, with the offensive line smothering the line of scrimmage, and a withering running attack led by quarterback Kyle Downer with 113 yards on 18 carries and fullback Mike Wandey with 94 yards on 19 carries; and WHEREAS, an aggressive, physical performance by the defense created three turnovers and orchestrated several stops on fourth down, including one by defensive back Chris Larkin on Westfield's opening drive that set the tone for the game; and WHEREAS, through their efforts, the Cougars advanced to the VHSL AAA Division 6 state semifinal; and WHEREAS, students and fans have expressed their pride in the performance of the 2012 Oakton Cougars, crediting the hard work of the players, the tactical leadership of the coaching staff, and the support of the administration; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Oakton High School football team on winning the Virginia High School League Northern Region championship; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jason Rowley, head coach of the Oakton High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for the team's perseverance, determination, and grit. |
