WHEREAS, in 1996 the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame was designated as the official Sports Hall of Fame of the Commonwealth of Virginia; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, located in Portsmouth, Virginia, was founded in 1972 and during this period of over 35 years has honored 293 Virginia athletes, coaches, and media; and WHEREAS, the mission of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is to honor, educate, and entertain through (i) selecting individuals who achieve greatness and serve as role models for Virginia's youth as inductees and (ii) serving as a nonprofit educational resource for math, science, health, and character development; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is honored to present its Class of 2011 inductees as follows: ATIIM "Tiki" BARBER Tiki Barber is a native of Roanoke, Virginia, and a graduate of the University of Virginia where he was the Cavalier's second all-time leading rusher. Named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year in 1996, he was a second round draft pick of the New York Giants in the 1997 National Football League Draft. With the Giants for nearly 10 years, Tiki Barber was selected to three Pro Bowls and finished his NFL career in 2006 as the all-time reception and rushing leader for New York. JOHN "Johnny" SYLVESTER NEWMAN Johnny Newman is a native of Danville, Virginia, and a graduate of the University of Richmond where he excelled in basketball and ended his college career as the all-time leading scorer in Spider history. He was a second round draft choice of the National Basketball Association Cleveland Cavaliers in 1986 where he scored 12,740 career points. Mr. Newman's professional basketball career covered 16 years with the NBA. JEFFREY "Jeff" NORMAN ROUSE Jeff Rouse is a native of Stafford, Virginia, and was a seven-time NCAA swimming champion at Stanford University. He received three Olympic Gold Medals and one Olympic Silver Medal in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics and in 1996 served as the U.S. Olympic Swim Team Captain. During his career, he won four U.S. National Championships and held a world record from 1991 to 1999. PERNELL "Sweet Pea" WHITAKER "Sweet Pea" Whitaker is a native of Norfolk, Virginia, and in 1984 was an Olympic Gold Medalist in boxing. He was a six-time World Boxing Champion and obtained a boxing professional record of 41 - 3 - 1 with 17 professional knockouts. He is recognized in the "boxing world" as, pound-for-pound, the greatest boxer ever. DR. JAMES "Jim" JARRETT Jim Jarrett served 43 years as the Director of Athletics at Old Dominion University. The athletic program during his tenure enjoyed a 91 percent student-athlete graduation rate and Dr. Jarrett was the first Athletic Director to offer scholarships to women. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. WILLIAM "Bill" H. LITTLEPAGE Bill Littlepage attended Bridgewater College and became the winningest basketball coach in Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group AAA history. At Hopewell High School, Coach Littlepage amassed an overall coaching record of 755 and 320. He received 26 VHSL Regional Tournament berths and advanced six times to the State Tournament. Coach Littlepage was recognized as the 1993 National Coach of the Year by the National Coaches Association. EUGENE CASSIDY "Pappy" THOMPSON Pappy Thompson attended Emory & Henry College and joined the Bristol Herald Courier in 1928. He devoted over 50 years to covering sports in Southwest Virginia. Mr. Thompson was also inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum be recognized for its outstanding programs and exhibits as Virginia's official sports hall of fame and that Atiim "Tiki" Barber, John "Johnny" Sylvester Newman, Jeffrey "Jeff" Norman Rouse, Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker, Dr. James "Jim" Jarrett, William "Bill" H. Littlepage, and Eugene Cassidy "Pappy" Thompson be commended as the 2011 inductees into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and that the Clerk of the House of Delegates further disseminate copies of this resolution to the 2011 inductees into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for their outstanding contributions to the world of sports. |
