Celebrating the life of William Stanley Rokus, V.M.D.

WHEREAS, William Stanley Rokus, V.M.D., a respected veterinarian from Leesburg who provided skilled and compassionate service throughout his career, died on February 3, 2013; and

WHEREAS, William "Bill" Rokus proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army as a technical sergeant; and

WHEREAS, Bill Rokus earned a bachelor's degree from Duke University, where he was a member of the football team, and a veterinary medical doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine; and

WHEREAS, in 1965, Dr. Rokus established Rokus Veterinary Hospital in Leesburg to care for both large and small animals; and

WHEREAS, for nearly 40 years, Dr. Rokus treated the community's animals, earning the trust of local residents for his wealth of knowledge and professional care; and

WHEREAS, a respected leader in his profession, Dr. Rokus was a member of Alpha Psi Veterinary Fraternity and the American Veterinary Medical Association; and

WHEREAS, for many years, Dr. Rokus served as the official veterinarian for the historic Loudoun Hunt Point-to-Point Races at Oatlands; he also provided his expertise as the design and management consultant for the Loudoun County Animal Shelter; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Rokus was honored by local residents for his devoted service and care when the Leesburg Today Best of Loudoun Poll voted him the Best Large Animal Vet in 1995 and 1997; and

WHEREAS, a man of many interests, Dr. Rokus earned a pilot's license, played tennis, and enjoyed foxhunting and bird hunting; he served as president of the Pennsylvania North Central Fox Hunter Association; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Rokus worshipped and participated in community fellowship with other members of St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church; and

WHEREAS, countless residents entrusted the care of their animals to Dr. Rokus, a vital member of the Leesburg community, relying on his extensive experience, dedication to the well-being of animals, and compassionate care; and

WHEREAS, Bill Rokus will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters, Jennifer and Lori, and numerous other family members, including his former wife, the Honorable Joan Gillette Rokus, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired citizen of Leesburg, William Stanley Rokus, V.M.D; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Stanley Rokus, V.M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
