WHEREAS, J. Clifford Hutt, a distinguished attorney who served Westmoreland County for more than 20 years on its board of supervisors and participated in numerous civic and community activities, died on November 13, 2011; and WHEREAS, a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, J. Clifford Hutt earned a law degree at the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, remaining a proud alumnus throughout his life and taking great pleasure when two sons and two grandchildren graduated from there with law degrees as well; and WHEREAS, J. Clifford Hutt spent several years as a young man serving his country as the nation became embroiled in World War II; he joined the United States Army as a private, eventually becoming a captain in the United States Army Air Corps; and WHEREAS, a combat pilot, J. Clifford Hutt flew P-40s and P-47s on dozens of missions as part of the 86th Fighter Squadron, 79th Fighter Group, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the American Defense Ribbon, the European Theatre Service Ribbon with four stars, and the American Theatre Service Ribbon; and WHEREAS, after his military service, J. Clifford Hutt returned to Montross, where he established a private law practice and faithfully served his clients until his retirement at the age of 87; and WHEREAS, respected for his keen legal insight, J. Clifford Hutt took an active role in the legal community, serving as a member and president of the Northern Neck Bar Association; and WHEREAS, J. Clifford Hutt also served as the Westmoreland County Commissioner of Accounts and as a board member for the Peoples Community Bank; and WHEREAS, a longtime resident of the area, J. Clifford Hutt developed a deep appreciation for the rural way of life and was committed to preserving the county's unique character while embracing responsible growth and development; and WHEREAS, J. Clifford Hutt provided wise counsel and thoughtful leadership as a member of the Westmoreland County Planning Commission, 20-year member of the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors, and 45-year member of the Potomac River Fisheries Commission; and WHEREAS, predeceased by two children, Mary Jane and Jeffrey, J. Clifford Hutt will be fondly remembered for his many stories and leaves behind many memories for his wife of 69 years, Beatrice; surviving children, John and Gary, and their families; and his other family members, friends, and admirers to cherish; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired citizen of Westmoreland County and the Commonwealth, J. Clifford Hutt; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of J. Clifford Hutt as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
