WHEREAS, the Lake Taylor High School girls' basketball team and the Lake Taylor High School boys' basketball team both represented Norfolk Public Schools and the City of Norfolk in the Virginia High School League Region 3A semifinal games at Norfolk State University on February 22, 2024; and
WHEREAS, the Lake Taylor girls' basketball team faced off against Grafton High School in a hard-fought contest, with the Lake Taylor Mighty Titans emerging victorious with a final score of 53–51; and
WHEREAS, the Lake Taylor girls' basketball team's victory was secured by an incredible two-point buzzer-beater from Avanni McDaniel, showcasing the team's determination and skill; and
WHEREAS, the Lake Taylor boys' basketball team competed against Lakeland High School, delivering a dominant performance and securing a resounding victory with a final score of 86–46; and
WHEREAS, the Lake Taylor boys' basketball team's impressive win demonstrated their exceptional teamwork and dedication to the sport; and
WHEREAS, Saundra Sawyer and Derek Edwards, the respective head coaches of the girls' and boys' basketball teams provided exceptional leadership, guidance, and dedication to the student-athletes in their care; and
WHEREAS, the Lake Taylor girls' and boys' basketball teams received unwavering support from Principal Latesha N. Wade-Jenkins, and the administration, faculty, and staff members of Lake Taylor High School; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Lake Taylor girls' and boys' basketball teams in the Virginia High School League Region 3A semifinal games have brought great pride and honor to Norfolk Public Schools, the City of Norfolk, and the entire Lake Taylor High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Lake Taylor High School basketball program for the outstanding performances of both the girls' and boys' basketball teams in their Virginia High School League Region 3A semifinal games; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to the Lake Taylor High School girls' basketball team, the Lake Taylor High School boys' basketball team, head coaches Saundra Sawyer and Derek Edwards, and Principal Latesha N. Wade-Jenkins on behalf of the administration, faculty, staff, and athletic department of Lake Taylor High School as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and appreciation for both teams' achievements.
