HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 297

Commending women who ran for public office in Virginia in 2017.

Patrons-- Convirs-Fowler, Guzman, Murphy, Plum, Turpin and Tyler; Senators: Howell, Marsden and Spruill
----------

WHEREAS, women, being about half of the population, have been vastly underrepresented in leadership positions and political office in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in 2017, an estimated 300 women answered the call and ran for public office in the Commonwealth for positions ranging from local to statewide; and

WHEREAS, women candidates made historic gains across the Commonwealth, as evidenced in the House of Delegates where, at the beginning of the 2018 Session of the General Assembly, women held a record-breaking 28 percent of the seats; and

WHEREAS, the success of women candidates will inspire future generations of women leaders to serve their communities and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend women who ran for public office in Virginia in 2017; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to representatives of women who ran for public office in Virginia in 2017 as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for their efforts to provide a voice for all women in the Commonwealth.
