Commending Alex Vardavas.

WHEREAS, Alex Vardavas, beloved on-air personality of WBTM in Danville and program director of the WBTM and WAKG radio stations, was named the Kiwanis Club of Danville's Citizen of the Year on December 7, 2023; and

WHEREAS, a native of Danville, Alex Vardavas began his illustrious career at WBTM when he was a rising junior at George Washington High School and continued to work at the station during weekends and summers while attending Elon University, where he earned a degree in political science; and

WHEREAS, Alex Vardavas began working at WBTM a week after graduating and has spent his entire professional career as a radio personality in Danville, delighting generations of listeners with songs and stories while becoming an integral part of the city's culture and identity; and

WHEREAS, for more than three decades, Alex Vardavas has hosted a local March of Dimes telethon, contributing greatly to the success of the organization and to the health of mothers and babies across the nation; and

WHEREAS, known for his reliability and truthfulness, Alex Vardavas was chosen by the Kiwanis Club of Danville for its 90th Citizen of the Year honor in part for his efforts to provide lifesaving information during Tropical Storm Michael in 2018, one of the most catastrophic natural disasters to hit Danville in recent history; and

WHEREAS, Alex Vardavas has received several awards in the past in recognition of his service and accomplishments, including the Humanitarian Award from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 647, the Service to Mankind Award from the Sertoma Club of Danville, and the Communication and Leadership Award from Toastmasters International; and

WHEREAS, on April 26, 2023, Alex Vardavas was inducted into the Elon University chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor societies; and

WHEREAS, with steadfast dedication to his hometown and an unwavering commitment to his listeners, Alex Vardavas has become a legend of the Danville airwaves and an important part of what makes the city a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Alex Vardavas for being named the 2023 Citizen of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Danville; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Alex Vardavas as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his contributions to Danville and the Commonwealth.
