WHEREAS, Maxie Lee Broaddus of Caroline County, a successful farmer, business person, role model, friend, person of great faith, and devoted father and grandfather, died on December 31, 2015; and WHEREAS, Maxie Broaddus was born and spent his entire life in Caroline County; he was a fourth-generation farmer and lived at Airy Hill Farm, which has been in his family for more than 100 years; and WHEREAS, at a young age, Maxie Broaddus became the sole operator of his family's farm; he was a self-taught farmer and worked very hard for many years to continue the operation; and WHEREAS, when Maxie Broaddus assumed responsibility for the farm, it encompassed 650 acres; from the beginning he carefully saved and invested his profits—year by year investing in small acreages or a new piece of equipment; and WHEREAS, Maxie Broaddus was honest and trusting, often completing transactions with a handshake; at the time of his death, he farmed 7,000 acres across three counties and was in charge of one of the most sprawling farming operations in the Commonwealth; and WHEREAS, Maxie Broaddus, who was a good friend to many people, was an eager student of agriculture and readily listened to the advice others gave him; he loved the land, was proud of his work, readily embracing new technology and more efficient methods of operation; and WHEREAS, Maxie Broaddus gave generously of his time and talents, and his community is better for it; he was a role model to many people, loved being around children, and made many donations to community organizations—often anonymously; and WHEREAS, Maxie Broaddus walked in faith every day of his life and woke up each morning certain in that knowledge; he was a member of Salem Baptist Church, where he enjoyed fellowship and worship; and WHEREAS, additionally, Maxie Broaddus was well-known as the operator of the "Walking Tall" monster truck, often exhibiting it at agricultural fairs, competitions, and church events; children flocked to see the truck, and his motto was "It's all about the kids"; and WHEREAS, Maxie Broaddus will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his daughters, Mindy, Jessica, and Danni, and their families; mother, Pat; brother, Mike; and many other family members, friends, and neighbors; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Maxie Lee Broaddus of Caroline County, a successful and hardworking farmer, generous friend and neighbor, and a devoted father and grandfather; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Maxie Lee Broaddus as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
