HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 251 Offered January 24, 2012 Celebrating the life of Eunice White Terry. ---------- Patrons-- Spruill; Senator: Miller, Y.B. ----------

WHEREAS, beloved wife, mother, and respected teacher Eunice White Terry peacefully passed away on November 14, 2011; and

WHEREAS, after receiving her early education in public schools in Norfolk and New York, Eunice Terry graduated from Booker T. Washington High School; she then enrolled at the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College where she was a cheerleader, and she earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia State College in Petersburg; and

WHEREAS, Eunice Terry stayed in her native Norfolk all her life; she worked for five years with the U.S. Army division of the Norfolk Naval Base before embarking on a 25-year teaching career in the Norfolk Public School System, where she touched the lives of many students and fostered academic excellence; and

WHEREAS, religion was a strong influence throughout Eunice Terry's life; she received her Christian education at First Calvary Baptist Church, and she continued to do good work through her involvement with various civic and charitable organizations; and

WHEREAS, in her lifetime, Eunice Terry was active in the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Tidewater Chapter, and the Norfolk - Virginia Beach chapter of Continental Societies, Inc., an organization that promotes the welfare of children; and

WHEREAS, Eunice Terry enjoyed her membership in the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority; she stayed active in her leisure time playing pinochle and bridge, and she was a member of the Tidewater Bridge Association; and

WHEREAS, Eunice Terry leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 64 years, Thomas R. Terry, Sr.; her son, Thomas R. Terry, Jr., and his family; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a devoted wife and mother who worked to make her community a better place, Eunice White Terry; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Eunice White Terry as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
