HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 229
Celebrating the life of Peter Lee McCandless.

WHEREAS, Peter Lee McCandless, a beloved member of the Reston community who played an outsized role in promoting the town after its founding in 1964, died on December 26, 2023; and

WHEREAS, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, Peter McCandless attended Principia School and graduated from Principia College in 1958; and

WHEREAS, Peter McCandless honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army and also taught English in Turkey and studied drama at Yale University before embarking on a long and successful career in public relations; and

WHEREAS, as one of the first employees of Reston founder Robert E. Simon's Palindrome Corporation, Peter McCandless contributed immeasurably to the town's prosperity and longevity; and

WHEREAS, Peter McCandless later extended his talents for public relations by founding his own agency, The McCandless Company, in 1984; and

WHEREAS, Peter McCandless was a gifted singer who helped to start the Reston Chorale in the late 1960s and who sang with the choir for many years; and

WHEREAS, Peter McCandless took every opportunity to travel and be outdoors, cultivating his passion for photography while documenting his adventures; and

WHEREAS, in recent years, Peter McCandless worked at the Great Harvest Bread Co. in Herndon, brightening customers' days through his warm and genial nature; and

WHEREAS, guided by his faith, Peter McCandless enjoyed worship and fellowship with his community at First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Reston; and

WHEREAS, preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy; Peter McCandless will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife, Susan; his children, Kristopher and Sarah, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Peter Lee McCandless, a treasured member of the Reston community whose kindness and generosity touched countless lives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Peter Lee McCandless as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
