HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 204
Celebrating the life of Shirley Hairston Wilson.

WHEREAS, Shirley Hairston Wilson of Norfolk, a respected citizen and outstanding community volunteer, died on October 31, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Hairston Wilson was born in Henry County on November 23, 1942, graduated from G.W. Carver High School in Henry County, and received a bachelor's degree in political science in 1975 and a master's degree in special education in 2001 from Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, after graduation, Shirley Wilson taught public school in Henry County and Portsmouth; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Wilson also worked as head teller for United Virginia Bank (now SunTrust Bank), as an administrator for Ryder Trucking Company, and as a student accounts technician for Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, a very spiritual, compassionate, and loving person, Shirley Wilson joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade at an early age, and when she moved to Norfolk became a faithful member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, always joyously helping her neighbors in need, Shirley Wilson was a member of the church usher board, the Gospel Choir, the Roy Woods Bible Class, and the Gleaners; she was a leader and tireless volunteer for the church's Booster, Food Pantry, Women's Fellowship, Golden Heirs, Aerobics Health and Wellness, Missionary, and Social Justice ministries; and

WHEREAS, a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Shirley Wilson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her loving husband, Jimmie D. Wilson; her children, Shelby W. Wilson and Michael D. Wilson; her grandchildren, Brandon M. Latney and Kyndall Chase Wilson; her many other family members and good friends; and the congregation at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine community volunteer and an outstanding Virginian, Shirley Hairston Wilson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Shirley Hairston Wilson as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
