WHEREAS, the Chilhowie High School girls' track and field team won the Virginia High School League Region 1D championship on May 22, 2023, at John McKilgore Park; and
WHEREAS, the Chilhowie High School Warriors tallied 118 points to outpace the four-time defending champions, the Patrick Henry High School Rebels of Glade Spring, by 15 points; and
WHEREAS, the Chilhowie Warriors were carried by a strong performance from Tess Somervell, who notched 30 points for the team by winning the 400-meter, 800-meter, and 1,600-meter events; and
WHEREAS, the Chilhowie Warriors' victory was a remarkable finish for coach Sadie Martello, who was in only her second year leading the team; and
WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the Chilhowie Warriors is the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches and teachers, and the unwavering support of the entire Chilhowie High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Chilhowie High School girls' track and field team for winning the 2023 Virginia High School League Region 1D championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sadie Martello, head coach of the Chilhowie High School girls' track and field team, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for their extraordinary achievement.
