WHEREAS, Julia Anderson Williams, an inspiring educator and leader who influenced the lives of countless young people during her tenure at the Collegiate School in Richmond, died on November 23, 2011; and WHEREAS, a graduate of Hollins College, Julia Williams was visiting her two children who were enrolled at Collegiate School when the head of the school, knowing of her degree in English, asked her to substitute teach; and WHEREAS, though reluctant at first, Julia Williams fell in love with teaching and her students while those she taught gained an enthusiastic educator who brought literature alive in the classroom and encouraged her students to excel in all their endeavors; and WHEREAS, in 1965 Julia Williams became a full-time teacher and, after receiving a master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, became head of the girl's school at Collegiate in 1972; and WHEREAS, known for the high standards she set for herself and her students, Julia Williams focused on ensuring that students received an outstanding education grounded in Collegiate School's proud traditions; and WHEREAS, Julia Williams played a pivotal role in the growth and development of Collegiate School as head of the Upper School, interim president, and academic vice president, helping to mentor and train future educators and leaders who would take the school into the 21st century; and WHEREAS, a vibrant and gracious woman, Julia Williams took a special interest in creating an environment where young women could achieve their potential and prepare to grow into strong and independent women; and WHEREAS, as former president of the National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls, Julia Williams shared her insight and experiences on a national level; and WHEREAS, active in community affairs, Julia Williams served on the boards of numerous charitable, business, and philanthropic organizations in the Richmond area and continued to remain active during retirement; and WHEREAS, predeceased by her daughter, Julia, Julia Williams will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her son, David, and his family; son-in-law, Gaylon, and his family; other family members and many friends; and former colleagues and students from Collegiate School; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved educator and administrator, Julia Anderson Williams; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Julia Anderson Williams as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory. |
