WHEREAS, Edward Thompson, an honorable veteran and active and beloved member of the Roanoke community, died on March 30, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Edward Thompson served his country with honor and distinction for several years as a member of the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, Edward Thompson dedicated 31 years to the City of Salem, contributing to the locality's efforts to serve its residents and businesses; and
WHEREAS, affectionately known throughout the Roanoke Valley as "Coach Ed" or "Mister William Fleming," Edward Thompson joined the staff at William Fleming High School in Roanoke in 1997 and worked tirelessly for 26 years to ensure the well-being of its student-athletes; and
WHEREAS, Edward Thompson was an avid sports fan who found great joy in cheering on his favorite team, the Washington Commanders of the National Football League; and
WHEREAS, Edward Thompson will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his siblings, Albert and Ramona, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Edward Thompson, a pillar of the William Fleming High School community whose legacy will inspire others for years to come; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Edward Thompson as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
