Celebrating the life of Douglas Durrell Monroe, Jr.

WHEREAS, Douglas Durrell Monroe, Jr., a respected banking executive and a community leader who enhanced the quality of life in the Northern Neck through his commitment to philanthropy and servant-leadership, died on August 31, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Douglas "Doug" Durrell Monroe, Jr., grew up in Pelham, New York, and spent summers in his youth on a farm in Irvington, gaining a lifelong appreciation for the natural beauty of the Northern Neck; and

WHEREAS, Doug Monroe earned a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University and a master's degree from Purdue University, then continued his graduate studies at Rutgers University; and

WHEREAS, Doug Monroe proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959 and was stationed aboard the destroyers USS McNair and USS Pillsbury; he also taught courses for the United States Navy at Purdue University; and

WHEREAS, after his honorable military service, Doug Monroe pursued a long and successful career in commercial banking and financial services, first with Wachovia Bank in Winston Salem, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, in 1965, Doug Monroe returned to the Commonwealth, moving his family to Irvington, and joined Lancaster National Bank, which soon after became Chesapeake Bank; and

WHEREAS, Doug Monroe devoted 58 years of service to Chesapeake Bank and ultimately became chief executive officer and chair of the board; under his innovative leadership, the bank created many new programs to better serve the community, including the nation's first bank branch on a boat; and

WHEREAS, highly admired in the banking industry, Doug Monroe was a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and was a past president of the Virginia Bankers Association; and

WHEREAS, Doug Monroe worked diligently to support the community in the Northern Neck and was a founding board member of the Chesapeake Academy, Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury retirement home, and Virginia Quality Life, Inc., a multi-faceted health, recreation, and education center, co-locating the Lower Northern Neck YMCA, the Lancaster County chapter of the American Red Cross, the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic, and the Rappahannock General Hospital on a single campus; and

WHEREAS, outside of his career and community service, Doug Monroe enjoyed fishing, boating, and playing golf; he was a former club champion at Indian Creek Country Club, where he proudly shot his age several times between 68 and 87; he also worked with Tides Inn Resort to preserve the Golden Eagle Golf Course created by the prolific golf course designer George W. Cobb; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep faith, Doug Monroe enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon and an elder; and

WHEREAS, Doug Monroe will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Douglas III, Margaret, Kathy, Wende, and John, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Douglas Durrell Monroe, Jr., a longtime banking executive and pillar of his community in the Northern Neck; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Douglas Durrell Monroe, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
