SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 993
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Bob, Sharon, and Tom Schieffer and their late mother,
  Gladys Schieffer, for their many outstanding contributions to
  society; and
         WHEREAS, The Schieffer siblings were recently honored with
  the 62nd Multicultural Alliance Award; based in Fort Worth, the
  Multicultural Alliance is dedicated to the eradication of
  prejudice, bias, and oppression; and
         WHEREAS, Each of the Schieffer siblings has risen to the
  upper echelons of his or her chosen profession; these Fort Worth
  natives have attributed their successes to the loving
  encouragement and the unwavering high expectations of Gladys
  Payne Schieffer, who was widowed at the age of 45 and dedicated
  her life to the advancement of her children's goals; and
         WHEREAS, Over the decades, journalist Bob Schieffer has
  played a vital role in the reporting of innumerable major news
  events, and he has been the moderator of Face the Nation and an
  anchor on the CBS Evening News; and
         WHEREAS, Educator and school administrator Sharon
  Schieffer Mayes was one of the first women to become the
  principal of a 5A school; the youngest sibling, Tom, has been an
  attorney, a legislator, and the United States ambassador to
  Australia and Japan, and he was also the president of the Texas
  Rangers baseball team; and
         WHEREAS, Each of these individuals has spoken poignantly
  of the influence of their loving mother; Gladys Payne Schieffer
  was a child of the Depression who had an unassailable work ethic;
  although she was never able to attain a college degree, she
  ensured that her children had that opportunity, and she ensured
  that they seized it; indeed, these highly accomplished siblings
  credit their mother with instilling in them the highest
  aspirations and a deep desire to make the world a better place;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby commend Bob, Sharon, Tom, and Gladys
  Schieffer for their many achievements and for their collective
  impact on humanity; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  them as an expression of highest esteem from the Texas Senate.
