SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 841
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Othal Brand
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of longtime McAllen mayor and civic leader
  Othal Brand, who died December 12, 2009, at the age of 90; and
         WHEREAS, Othal Brand was born in Grayson, Georgia, in 1919;
  he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps the day after the
  Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and served in the military for four
  years; during his time as a Marine, he met his wife of 64 years,
  Kay, and the couple moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1954; and
         WHEREAS, He learned the value of hard work at an early age,
  selling fruit door to door during the Great Depression to help
  his family after his father became disabled; along with his
  brothers, he went on to establish Brand Brothers Produce, which
  became one of the world's largest vegetable growers; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Brand became a member of the McAllen City
  Commission in 1973 and in 1977 was elected mayor, a position he held
  for 20 years; the city experienced impressive growth during his
  tenure as mayor, and he played an important role in establishing
  South Texas Community College and the Boys and Girls Club; and
         WHEREAS, Known for his attention to detail and his
  remarkable reserves of energy, Mr. Brand went to exceptional
  lengths to accomplish his goals, and his outspokenness and
  unyielding determination set an enduring example for others; and
         WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and vitality, he
  served his community with purpose and resolve, and his many
  achievements have left a lasting legacy; and
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
  grandfather, and he will continue to live in the hearts and minds
  of those he left behind; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family and
  friends of Othal Brand; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Othal Brand.
