WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
recognize the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines in honor of Red | ||
Ribbon Week, which is being celebrated October 23 through 31, | ||
2023; and | ||
WHEREAS, Young Marines is a youth program that serves boys | ||
and girls from the age of eight until high school graduation; the | ||
program focuses on teaching youth positive values such as | ||
leadership, citizenship through community service, | ||
self-discipline, and the importance of living a healthy, | ||
drug-free lifestyle; and | ||
WHEREAS, Red Ribbon Week, celebrated annually throughout | ||
the nation, began in 1988 to honor Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" | ||
Camarena of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration; | ||
Agent Camarena was killed in Mexico in 1985 as a result of his | ||
work in combatting illegal drugs and drug-trafficking, and the | ||
wearing of a red ribbon and celebration of Red Ribbon Week pays | ||
tribute to his life and service and signifies a commitment to | ||
promoting education and awareness about drug-use prevention; and | ||
WHEREAS, Organized by the National Family Partnership, a | ||
nationwide coalition formed in 1980 to combat drug use by young | ||
people, the Red Ribbon Campaign is the nation's oldest and | ||
largest drug prevention awareness program; this year, the | ||
Guadalupe Valley Young Marines is holding its Fourth Annual Kiki | ||
Camarena Run with a Ride to Be Drug Free event taking place on | ||
October 21, 2023; and | ||
WHEREAS, The Guadalupe Valley Young Marines' participation | ||
in Red Ribbon Week plays a key role in encouraging and equipping | ||
communities in Texas to educate youth about drug-use prevention, | ||
and it is indeed fitting that this outstanding organization | ||
receive recognition on its important efforts and its | ||
participation in this exemplary national event; now, therefore, | ||
be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th | ||
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend the members of | ||
the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines on their many contributions to | ||
the health and well-being of young people in Texas and extend to | ||
all participating in Red Ribbon Week best wishes for this year's | ||
celebration; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in | ||
honor of this special event. |
