Charles A. Hunter | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of minister, college | ||
June 12, 2011, at the age of 85; and | ||
WHEREAS, Dr. Hunter was born May 7, 1926; a native of | ||
Longview, he earned bachelor's degrees from Bishop College and | ||
Howard University before earning master of divinity and doctor of | ||
theology degrees from the Philadelphia Divinity School; he also | ||
held a master's degree from the University of North Texas; and | ||
WHEREAS, Dr. Hunter served as pastor of nondenominational | ||
churches in Alabama and Florida before moving to Dallas to become | ||
a Presbyterian minister; he was pastor of New Hope Presbyterian | ||
Church, Saint Luke Presbyterian Church, and Glendale | ||
Presbyterian Church before becoming assistant pastor, and later | ||
associate pastor, at Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church; and | ||
WHEREAS, Dr. Hunter began his career in academia as a | ||
sociology professor at Bishop College, where he eventually | ||
became director of the sociology department and head of the | ||
department of urban affairs; he went on to serve as an adjunct | ||
professor at Southern Methodist University, The University of | ||
Texas at Arlington, and Richland College; and | ||
WHEREAS, Dr. Hunter was committed to advancing race | ||
relations and promoting peace; in 1968, he cofounded Amigos, an | ||
organization that promoted social outings between black and | ||
white couples; he was the first African American elected | ||
presiding officer of the Northeast Texas Presbytery and was | ||
actively involved in many community and philanthropic | ||
organizations, including the Dallas Peace Center, the Trinity | ||
River Authority, and the Greater Dallas Housing and Opportunity | ||
Center; and | ||
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and abiding faith, he | ||
gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his open-mindedness, | ||
and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be | ||
forgotten by those who knew him; and | ||
WHEREAS, He was an inspiration to others, and although he | ||
will be deeply missed by his family and many friends, he will | ||
continue to live in their hearts and minds for years to come; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere | ||
condolences to the bereaved family of Dr. Charles A. Hunter: his | ||
children, Rhonda, Rhashell, Rosalyn, and Byron Hunter; his | ||
sisters, Delores Simms and Dorothy Griffin; his brother, Julian | ||
Hunter; and his three grandchildren; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of | ||
Dr. Charles A. Hunter. | ||
