| Israel M. Nájera | ||
| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and pays | ||
| tribute to the life of Brownsville resident Israel M. Nájera, who | ||
| died February 17, 2013, at the age of 88; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This loving father and dedicated public servant | ||
| was beloved by many for his integrity, courage, and abiding work | ||
| ethic; he taught his children to cultivate opportunity and | ||
| education and to believe that through concerted effort, they | ||
| could succeed at anything; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Born October 14, 1924, Israel Nájera lost his | ||
| father at the age of three and became a shoeshine boy at the age | ||
| of six; the Great Depression had just begun, and he quickly | ||
| learned that innovation and determination were keys to survival; | ||
| when he was 16 years old, he joined the Civilian Conservation | ||
| Corps and served in New Mexico; and | ||
| WHEREAS, After returning to Brownsville, he took a job with | ||
| the Brownsville Fire Department in 1947; he would spend the next | ||
| 40 years serving his community, ultimately becoming the city's | ||
| assistant fire chief; he belonged to the International | ||
| Association of Fire Fighters and was a charter and lifetime | ||
| member of Brownsville Local 970; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Nájera was widely respected in his hometown of | ||
| Brownsville; he was involved in many civic activities, and his | ||
| friends and colleagues admired his devotion to his family and the | ||
| way in which he passed down his values to his children and | ||
| grandchildren, who will forever cherish his memory; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, | ||
| 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the | ||
| bereaved family of Israel M. Nájera; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the | ||
| Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do | ||
| so in memory of Israel Nájera. | ||
