SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Saint Luke Community United Methodist Church in Dallas
on the occasion of its 90th anniversary, which will be celebrated
on April 30, 2023, and will continue to be observed throughout
2023; and
WHEREAS, The Saint Luke Community United Methodist Church
was established in 1933 with the help and guidance of members and
leaders of the historic Saint Paul Methodist Church in downtown
Dallas; originally known as the Saint Paul Mission Church, the
new congregation was founded in an effort to develop a methodist
church in the East Dallas community; and
WHEREAS, In the late 1930s, the church's congregation
transitioned from meeting in a small storefront building to
holding services in a structure they built together; after a fire
destroyed the building in 1941, church members gathered for
services in the home of a member of the congregation until
repairs and construction of the building were completed in 1945;
and
WHEREAS, The church was renamed Saint Luke Methodist
Church in the 1950s, and under the leadership of Reverend Zan W.
Holmes Jr., who served as pastor from 1974 until 2002, the church
moved to its present-day location and added the word "Community"
to its name to reflect its commitment to serving others; and
WHEREAS, Once the smallest church in the North Texas
Conference of the United Methodist Church, Saint Luke Community
United Methodist Church has grown in members as well as in its
ministry and church facilities; through the dedicated efforts of
its members and leaders throughout the years, the church has
developed a global missionary presence, a powerful worship
ministry, and a community outreach program committed to serving
the people of East Dallas, and it is indeed fitting that the
church receive special recognition on its 90th anniversary; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
Legislature, hereby commend the clergy and congregates of Saint
Luke Community United Methodist Church and extend to all best
wishes as they commemorate their church's 90th anniversary; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
honor of this special occasion.
