WHEREAS, Along with many other areas on the Texas Gulf
Coast, Galveston Island State Park suffered catastrophic damage
in 2008 as a result of Hurricane Ike and its aftermath; the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department has worked diligently since that
time to restore the park, and with the aid of state and federal
funding, the valuable assistance of partners including Friends

to reopen for limited access just six months after Hurricane Ike,

WHEREAS, Throughout the park's restoration, the Galveston

project was realized through $10.6 million in funding provided
through the Deepwater Horizon Natural Resources Damage

state's sales tax on sporting goods to design and rebuild the
park with the goal of preservation and greater resilience against
extreme weather events; and
WHEREAS, The Galveston Island State Park Beach
Redevelopment project has demonstrated Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department's ongoing commitment to conserving the endangered
Coastal Prairie habitat located within Galveston Island State
Park, and the department's concerted efforts to restore and
protect our state's natural resources continue to ensure that
Texas residents and visitors and future generations of Texans
will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy the state's
treasured outdoor spaces and its enduring natural beauty; and
