Ben Garza | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
commemorates the life of Dr. Ben Leonel Garza, who died February | ||
5, 2021, at the age of 82; and | ||
WHEREAS, Ben Garza was an exemplary citizen and a dedicated | ||
physician who had a positive impact on the fabric of life in his | ||
Edinburg community; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born on January 17, 1939, in Mercedes, he earned a | ||
degree from The University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 1961, | ||
and he managed his family's drug store in McAllen for a time | ||
before returning to school and earning a medical degree from The | ||
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; and | ||
WHEREAS, He practiced medicine for more than 45 years at | ||
the Edinburg Medical Center in partnership with two of his | ||
brothers and two other physicians; he was highly respected for | ||
his expertise as a physician and for his compassion and care for | ||
area citizens; and | ||
WHEREAS, Dr. Garza was noted for his love of sports, and he | ||
served for many years as a team doctor for The University of Texas | ||
Pan American and Edinburg Independent School District athletic | ||
programs; he received numerous honors for his service as a | ||
physician for athletic programs, including the Rio Grande Valley | ||
Sports Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Award and The | ||
University of Texas Pan American Athletics Hall of Honor Award; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, He was active in a wide range of civic and | ||
charitable organizations, including the Edinburg Independent | ||
School District Board of Trustees, the Texas Jaycees, and the | ||
American Cancer Society; he served on the Boy Scouts of America | ||
National Committee for International Scouting, and he served for | ||
20 years in the Texas National Guard and retired as a colonel; and | ||
WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife, Patty Garza, enjoyed 32 | ||
years of marriage together; his children, Loretta, Veronica, | ||
Brooke, Brennan, Ben, Steven, and Cesar, and his eight | ||
grandchildren brought him much pride and joy; and | ||
WHEREAS, He was a source of strength to his large and | ||
loving extended family and a mentor to countless young | ||
physicians; he leaves behind memories that will be cherished | ||
forever by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th | ||
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
family of Dr. Ben Leonel Garza; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Dr. Ben Garza. | ||
