SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 118
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join
  the citizens of Athens and Texans across the state in celebrating
  February 7, 2017, as Athens Day at the State Capitol; and
         WHEREAS, The City of Athens was incorporated in 1856, and
  through the years, this charming East Texas town has seen
  significant growth; today, its diverse economic base includes
  industrial manufacturing and other businesses, in addition to
  farming and livestock ventures; the town's thriving education
  system is a key element of its success and productivity, and
  Trinity Valley Community College is a first-rate institute; and
         WHEREAS, Athens has been proclaimed the "Original Home of
  the Hamburger" by the Texas Legislature in tribute to the role
  that city resident Fletcher Davis played in the creation of this
  American favorite; and
         WHEREAS, The city's visitors and residents enjoy such
  cultural institutions as the East Texas Arboretum, the Henderson
  County Historical Museum, the Henderson County Performing Arts
  Center, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, where a
  300,000-gallon aquarium features a variety of native Texas fish
  in their natural environment; and
         WHEREAS, The City of Athens is a lovely community and an
  outstanding place in which to live, work, and raise a family, and
  residents can confidently embrace their future while continuing
  to preserve their rich and colorful past; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, hereby commend the people of Athens for their many
  contributions to the growth and progress of our state and extend
  to the visiting delegation best wishes for an enjoyable Athens
  Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the city as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate.
