| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join | ||
| the citizens of Athens and Texans across the state in celebrating | ||
| February 7, 2017, as Athens Day at the State Capitol; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The City of Athens was incorporated in 1856, and | ||
| through the years, this charming East Texas town has seen | ||
| significant growth; today, its diverse economic base includes | ||
| industrial manufacturing and other businesses, in addition to | ||
| farming and livestock ventures; the town's thriving education | ||
| system is a key element of its success and productivity, and | ||
| Trinity Valley Community College is a first-rate institute; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Athens has been proclaimed the "Original Home of | ||
| the Hamburger" by the Texas Legislature in tribute to the role | ||
| that city resident Fletcher Davis played in the creation of this | ||
| American favorite; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The city's visitors and residents enjoy such | ||
| cultural institutions as the East Texas Arboretum, the Henderson | ||
| County Historical Museum, the Henderson County Performing Arts | ||
| Center, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, where a | ||
| 300,000-gallon aquarium features a variety of native Texas fish | ||
| in their natural environment; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The City of Athens is a lovely community and an | ||
| outstanding place in which to live, work, and raise a family, and | ||
| residents can confidently embrace their future while continuing | ||
| to preserve their rich and colorful past; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
| Legislature, hereby commend the people of Athens for their many | ||
| contributions to the growth and progress of our state and extend | ||
| to the visiting delegation best wishes for an enjoyable Athens | ||
| Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| the city as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate. | ||
