| WHEREAS, Philanthropist George P. Mitchell has demonstrated | ||
| exceptional patriotism and generosity through his support for the | ||
| Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A member of the Greatest Generation, Mr. Mitchell | ||
| served his country in the United States Army Corps of Engineers | ||
| during World War II; he became the chair and chief executive officer | ||
| of Mitchell Energy and Development Corporation, and he and his | ||
| wife, the late Cynthia Mitchell, established the Cynthia and George | ||
| Mitchell Foundation in 1978; since its inception, the foundation | ||
| has made significant donations to a wide variety of causes, among | ||
| them the Vietnam Veterans Monument in Austin; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The construction of the monument was authorized in | ||
| 2005 by the 79th Texas Legislature with the passage of House | ||
| Concurrent Resolution 36, authored by Representative Wayne Smith | ||
| and Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa; the groundbreaking for the | ||
| monument was held on the State Capitol grounds on March 25, 2013; | ||
| the completed monument will pay tribute to the 3,417 Texans who gave | ||
| their lives for their country while serving in the Vietnam War, as | ||
| well as to those who returned, often to face significant challenges | ||
| as a result of their battlefield experiences; moreover, the | ||
| monument will reflect the ethnic diversity of the troops and their | ||
| common devotion to duty, honor, and country; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Through his commitment to the creation of an | ||
| enduring memorial to the service and sacrifice of Texas veterans of | ||
| the Vietnam War, George Mitchell has earned the gratitude of his | ||
| fellow citizens, and it is indeed fitting to recognize his | ||
| exceptional contributions to our state and nation at this time; | ||
| now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the 83rd Legislature of the State of Texas | ||
| hereby commend George Mitchell for his generous support of the | ||
| Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument through the Cynthia and | ||
| George Mitchell Foundation and extend to him sincere appreciation | ||
| for his many philanthropic endeavors; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Mr. Mitchell as an expression of high regard by the | ||
| Texas House of Representatives and Senate. | ||
