| relating to inclusion of instruction regarding police officers in | ||
| the required curriculum for ninth grade public school students. | ||
| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Section 28.025, Education Code, is amended by | ||
| adding Subsection (b-20) to read as follows: | ||
| (b-20) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules to | ||
| include in the required curriculum for students in ninth grade | ||
| instruction regarding: | ||
| (1) the role of law enforcement and the duties and | ||
| responsibilities of police officers; | ||
| (2) a person's rights concerning interactions with | ||
| police officers; | ||
| (3) proper behavior for civilians and police officers | ||
| during interactions; | ||
| (4) laws regarding questioning and detention by police | ||
| officers, including any law requiring a person to present proof of | ||
| identity to a police officer, and the consequences for a person's or | ||
| officer's failure to comply with those laws; and | ||
| (5) how and where to file a complaint against a police | ||
| officer. | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2018-2019 | ||
| school year. | ||
| SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
| a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
| provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
| Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
| Act takes effect September 1, 2017. | ||
