relating to requiring a school district to notify certain parents | ||
or guardians of a program providing students with reading | ||
disabilities the ability to borrow audiobooks free of charge. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 28.006, Education Code, is amended by | ||
adding Subsection (g-2) to read as follows: | ||
(g-2) A school district shall notify the parent or guardian | ||
of each student in kindergarten or first, second, or seventh grade | ||
determined, on the basis of a screening under Section 38.003 or | ||
other basis, to have dyslexia or a related disorder, or | ||
determined, on the basis of reading instrument results, to be at | ||
risk for dyslexia or other reading difficulties, of the program | ||
maintained by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission | ||
providing students with reading disabilities the ability to borrow | ||
audiobooks free of charge. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2019-2020 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
