A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to requiring an opt-out policy for accelerated mathematics
  courses for certain students.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Subchapter A, Chapter 28, Education Code, is
  amended by adding Sec. 28.02111 to read as follows:
         Sec. 28.02111.  STUDENT QUALIFICATION FOR ACCELERATED
  MATHEMATICS COURSES. (a) School districts shall establish an
  opt-out policy to enroll students into accelerated math in 6th
  grade to improve chances of gaining access to Algebra I in 8th
  grade, to increase the number of students completing advanced math
  in high school propelling them for college and workforce
  readiness.
         SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
  a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
  provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
  Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
  Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
