relating to coordinated health programs for public school students. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 38.013, Education Code, is amended by | ||
amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (a-2) to read as | ||
follows: | ||
(a) The agency shall make available to each school district | ||
one or more coordinated health programs designed to prevent | ||
obesity, cardiovascular disease, oral diseases, and Type 2 diabetes | ||
and to integrate health-promoting practices in the school setting | ||
for [ |
||
students. Each program must provide for coordinating education and | ||
services related to: | ||
(1) health education, including oral health | ||
education; | ||
(2) physical education and physical activity; | ||
(3) nutrition services; [ |
||
(4) school nutrition environment; | ||
(5) family engagement; | ||
(6) safe and supportive school climate; | ||
(7) counseling, psychological, and social services; | ||
(8) physical environment; | ||
(9) school employee wellness; and | ||
(10) community involvement [ |

(a-2) The agency shall make the criteria adopted under | ||
Subsection (a-1) available to districts and provide clear guidance | ||
regarding the development of programs by districts in accordance | ||
with the criteria. The agency shall provide a timely and efficient | ||
process for approving programs developed by a district. The agency | ||
shall make available under Subsection (a) programs developed by | ||
districts that are approved under the process provided by the | ||
agency under this subsection. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
