WHEREAS, Longtime educators Ramiro and Hortencia Hinojosa of | ||
Starr County made a positive difference in their community, and | ||
their legacies continue to resonate among all those whose lives | ||
they touched; and | ||
WHEREAS, Ramiro Hinojosa was born in 1927 in Linton Ranch and | ||
graduated from San Isidro High School in 1945; he went on to attend | ||
Pan American College and to earn a bachelor's degree in 1950 from | ||
The University of Texas at Austin, where he was among only a handful | ||
of Hispanic students; answering his nation's call to duty, he | ||
served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and earned the rank of | ||
sergeant; and | ||
WHEREAS, The former Hortencia "Nena" Yzaguirre was born in | ||
1930 in Falcon, the youngest of seven children; she graduated from | ||
Rio Grande City High School in 1948 and subsequently became the | ||
first and only college graduate in her family when she obtained her | ||
bachelor's degree in elementary education from Texas A&I | ||
University; she was passionate about teaching and served at schools | ||
in Fronton and El Sauz before accepting a position in Roma, where | ||
she met the love of her life, Ramiro Hinojosa; and | ||
WHEREAS, The couple married on May 27, 1956, and soon | ||
welcomed a son, Ricardo, into their family; through the years, they | ||
were further blessed with two daughters, Sara and Yvette, and | ||
another son, Omar; at the same time, Mr. and Mrs. Hinojosa continued | ||
their teaching careers in Roma, and Mr. Hinojosa also pursued | ||
master's degrees in counseling and management; he eventually left | ||
the classroom to serve as the academic counselor at Roma High School | ||
and later as the curriculum director for the Roma Independent | ||
School District; Mr. and Mrs. Hinojosa were active in their | ||
community as well, as members of El Cid Caravan No. 106, of which | ||
they became Grand Sultan and Sultress; and | ||
WHEREAS, In 1981, Mr. Hinojosa was selected as superintendent | ||
of schools for the San Isidro Independent School District, and with | ||
his wife's support, he embraced the challenge; they both spent | ||
their final working years employed by the district before retiring | ||
in 1986; and | ||
WHEREAS, This dynamic pair always lived life to the fullest, | ||
and retirement was no different; together they took pleasure in | ||
traveling, gardening, and spending time with their growing family; | ||
Mr. Hinojosa passed away in 1995, and Mrs. Hinojosa followed in | ||
2002; although their deaths brought great sadness to many people, | ||
memories of their devotion to each other, their loved ones, their | ||
students, and their professions are deeply treasured; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the lives of | ||
Ramiro and Nena Hinojosa. | ||
