WHEREAS, Members of the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock | ||
celebrated the 30th anniversary of its founding on June 17, 2013; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, The Diocese of Lubbock was established on that day | ||
in 1983 by Pope John Paul II; home to 55 priests and 71 deacons, the | ||
diocese oversees a region that encompasses 25 counties and 62 | ||
member parishes; and | ||
WHEREAS, Having more than doubled in size since its | ||
inception, the diocese today serves over 72,000 area Catholics; | ||
Michael Sheehan, ordained as the city's first bishop, spent a | ||
decade leading the institution, followed by Bishop Placido | ||
Rodriguez, who has contributed vitally to this community of faith | ||
for nearly 20 years; and | ||
WHEREAS, During the past three decades, thousands of Texans | ||
have looked to the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock for moral guidance, | ||
spiritual enrichment, and fellowship, and it is a pleasure to join | ||
in congratulating all those whose efforts have helped to shape its | ||
rich history; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 30th | ||
anniversary of the founding of the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock and | ||
extend to its parishioners and clergy sincere best wishes for the | ||
future; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for the diocese as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
