WHEREAS, John Mares is retiring from his position as head | ||
football coach and athletic director at Goliad High School at the | ||
end of the 2014-2015 school year, drawing to a close an impressive | ||
35-year career in education and athletics; and | ||
WHEREAS, A 1969 graduate of St. Joseph High School in | ||
Victoria, John Mares began his coaching career as an assistant at | ||
Calhoun and Hallettsville Sacred Heart High Schools; he went on to | ||
serve as head baseball coach and defensive coordinator of the | ||
football team at Goliad High School before returning to his alma | ||
mater in 1991; he spent two decades at St. Joseph, becoming the | ||
winningest football coach in school history with an impressive 108 | ||
victories and also holding the posts of athletic director and | ||
basketball coach; and | ||
WHEREAS, This esteemed mentor came back to Goliad High in | ||
2010, taking over the school's baseball program and joining the | ||
football staff as an assistant; he was promoted to athletic | ||
director and head football coach in 2012, and he quickly helped the | ||
Tigers find success on the gridiron; in his final season, the team | ||
claimed the District 15-3A crown and advanced to the area round of | ||
the University Interscholastic League playoffs, and Coach Mares | ||
finished his career with an impressive 131-59 overall record in | ||
football; moreover, a number of the school's other teams have found | ||
success during his tenure as athletic director, capturing several | ||
district championships; and | ||
WHEREAS, During his retirement, Coach Mares plans to spend | ||
more time with his children and grandchildren and to devote himself | ||
to working on his ranch in Goliad County; and | ||
WHEREAS, For three and a half decades, John Mares has helped | ||
teach young Texans important lessons about teamwork and commitment, | ||
and he may indeed reflect with pride on his many accomplishments as | ||
he looks forward to the next exciting chapter of his life; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate John Mares on his retirement as | ||
head football coach and athletic director at Goliad High School and | ||
extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be | ||
it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Coach Mares as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
