R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Monigold family of Marshall has deep roots in
Harrison County, and they are indeed deserving of recognition for
their contributions to the history and heritage of the Lone Star
  State; and
WHEREAS, John C. Monigold, Sr., his wife, Jennie, and his
brother Jonas settled in Marshall about 1900; the two men were
masons and helped build many courthouses and municipal buildings in
East Texas; Jennie Monigold was active in her church and was
well-known for traveling by horse and buggy to attend "Mother's
Clubs," an early form of the PTA; she embodied the family spirit of
independence by starting her own business in her late 60s; Mrs.
Monigold lived to be 101 years old, and her enterprise remains a
  going concern; and
WHEREAS, Leonard Monigold, a son of John and Jennie Monigold,
married Genevieve Langley, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Morgan
LaNoue Langley; the Langley family arrived in Texas from Tennessee
in the 1850s; in 1854, they purchased land in the vicinity of the
present-day community of Scottsville; Thomas Langley served with

  Harrison County; and
WHEREAS, Leonard and Genevieve Langley Monigold enjoyed a
marriage of 65 years; Leonard Monigold, a resident of Marshall for
more than eight decades, was a mason, like his father, and a labor
union advocate; he taught the family's traditional craft to his
son, William, who still resides in Marshall; high-spirited
Genevieve was a poet, newspaper columnist, and suffragist, and when
women got the vote, she waited on the judge's steps until midnight
in order to become one of the first registered female voters in
Harrison County; many of her writings are housed in the library of
the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs in Austin; and
WHEREAS, Leonard and Genevieve Monigold had five children,
four of whom remained lifelong residents of Marshall; their oldest
son, Leonard Jackson "Jack" Monigold, became a tile contractor and
married Betty Hintz, who is actively involved in the Republican
  Party; and
WHEREAS, The civic inclinations of this profoundly Texan
family continue today; several members of the family have spent
their careers in the statehouse, and the family's youngest member,
Langley Franks, can often be seen in the halls of the Capitol, which
has been a second home to her since infancy; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, the contributions made by John
and Jennie Monigold and their descendants have become interwoven in
the compelling story of the Lone Star State, and it is indeed
fitting that their achievements be acknowledged at this time; now,
  therefore, be it
