WHEREAS, Residents of Amarillo are mourning the loss of a | ||
dynamic community leader with the death of Joseph Robert McCartt on | ||
December 28, 2020, at the age of 73; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born in Amarillo to Helen and Eugene McCartt on July | ||
2, 1947, Joe Bob McCartt graduated from Amarillo High School in | ||
1964; he went on to attend Amarillo College and West Texas State | ||
University before earning his bachelor's degree in business | ||
administration from the University of Mississippi in 1971; and | ||
WHEREAS, Over the course of a successful career in commercial | ||
real estate that spanned nearly a half century, Mr. McCartt played | ||
a leading role in the revitalization of downtown Amarillo, | ||
contributing to the redesign of Center City, the repurposing of the | ||
Paramount Building as office space, and the conversion of the Fisk | ||
Building into a downtown hotel; he was also an important | ||
participant in the acquisition of the Chase Tower, the development | ||
of the Amarillo Center at West Texas A&M University, and the | ||
redevelopment of the Woolworth and Levine buildings, as well as in | ||
the development of numerous other commercial properties in Amarillo | ||
and Oklahoma City; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. McCartt was beloved by his associates for his | ||
wonderful sense of humor and his clever "Joe Bobisms"; he played as | ||
hard as he worked, and he delighted in the time he spent in the | ||
outdoors with his sons, J. and Collin, hunting in the Panhandle, | ||
fishing at Rockport, or kayaking the Llano River; he especially | ||
enjoyed their trip together to Normandy, where they paid tribute to | ||
the sacrifice of American soldiers on the battlefields of World War | ||
II; a man of deep religious conviction, Mr. McCartt was a lifelong | ||
member and senior warden of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where he | ||
played a leading role in the campaign to rebuild the church; and | ||
WHEREAS, Joe Bob McCartt lived a full and generous life, and | ||
he leaves behind a legacy of optimism, civic engagement, and joie de | ||
vivre that will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved | ||
him; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Joseph Robert | ||
McCartt and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family: | ||
to his wife, Debra McCartt; to his sons, J. McCartt and his wife, | ||
Marty, and Collin McCartt and his wife, Sharesa; to his | ||
stepchildren, Abby Nickles Salter and her husband, Jason, Courtney | ||
Nickles Moran and her husband, Patrick, Melissa Ballou Kates and | ||
her husband, Ged, Morgan Ballou and his wife, Emily, and Brandon | ||
Ballou; to his grandchildren, Susie, Elle, Will, Max, Alice, | ||
Greyson, Clara, Harper, Drew, Brett, Clay, Beau, Ellison, and | ||
Kiley; to his brother, Gene McCartt, and his wife, Carol; and to his | ||
other relatives and many friends; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Joe Bob | ||
McCartt. | ||
