R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Major General Dana J. H. Pittard of the U.S. Army is
  accepting a new assignment in May 2013, drawing to a close his
  exemplary tenure as commander of Fort Bliss in El Paso; and
         WHEREAS, Post commander since July 2010 and commander of the
  1st Armored Division since May 2011, Major General Pittard has
  supervised the transition of Fort Bliss into the division's new
  headquarters, helping to make the base one of the leading combat
  training installations in the country; during his command, the
  quality of life for soldiers and their families has been improved
  through the construction of new facilities, including the on-base
  Freedom Crossing shopping center, and he has also overseen ongoing
  efforts to make Fort Bliss self-sufficient in energy, water, and
  waste disposal by 2018; and
         WHEREAS, Born in El Paso, Major General Pittard graduated
  from Eastwood High School in 1977 and from the U.S. Military Academy
  at West Point in 1981; he has also attended the U.S. Army Command
  and General Staff College and held a Senior Service College
  Fellowship at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard
  University; and
         WHEREAS, Major General Pittard's distinguished career
  includes postings at Fort Riley, Kansas, and in Berlin, Germany,
  and he served in Saudi Arabia as a company commander during
  Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm; he went on to serve as a
  military aide to President Bill Clinton, as a combat team commander
  in Kosovo and Iraq, as commanding general of the Iraqi Assistance
  Group, and as commanding general of Fort Irwin in California; his
  most recent position before taking command of Fort Bliss was as
  deputy chief of staff for operations and training at the Training
  and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, Virginia; and
         WHEREAS, This outstanding soldier has been awarded the
  Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with two oak
  leaf clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device and the Bronze
  Star Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service
  Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, and
  the Army Achievement Medal with three oak leaf clusters; and
         WHEREAS, For more than three decades, Major General Pittard
  has served his nation bravely and well, meeting every assignment
  with skill and determination, and as he embarks on the next exciting
  phase of his career, he may indeed take great pride in his
  impressive record of accomplishment at Fort Bliss; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Major General Dana J. H. Pittard on his
  outstanding service as commander of Fort Bliss and extend to him
  sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Major General Pittard as an expression of high regard
  by the Texas House of Representatives.
