R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, A respected community leader has been honored with
  the dedication of the new Sylvia A. Carreon Community Center in El
  Paso on October 16, 2021; and
         WHEREAS, Active in the Mission Valley area for many years,
  Sylvia Carreon began coaching Lady Longhorns basketball teams more
  than three decades ago; her squads competed in the city leagues,
  with a number of the players winning scholarships or MVP
  recognition, and some of the athletes she coached went on to play
  basketball at the high school, college, and professional levels;
  when there weren't enough girls' teams, she fought for and won the
  right for young women to play in the boys' leagues; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Carreon has also been involved in a variety of
  community service projects in the Mission Valley, and she
  encouraged her players, fellow coaches, and players' families to
  participate as well; for more than 20 years, she served as a deputy
  with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office; and
         WHEREAS, The new Carreon Community Center is a handsome
  31,000-square-foot facility with an upper terrace, a deck, and a
  renovated soccer field; in addition, it includes a double
  gymnasium, a weight room, a community meeting space and kitchen, a
  cyber lounge, and a courtyard; it is the first community center in
  El Paso to be named for a Latina; and
         WHEREAS, Sylvia Carreon has been a mentor and an inspiration
  to countless young women, and the naming of this community
  gathering place in her honor is a fitting tribute to her lifetime of
  service to others; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
  Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the dedication
  of the Sylvia A. Carreon Community Center and extend to Ms. Carreon
  sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Carreon as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
