| WHEREAS, The year 2014 marks the 75th anniversary of Cal | ||
| Farley's Boys Ranch in Amarillo; and | ||
| WHEREAS, An accomplished civic leader and respected | ||
| businessman, Cal Farley was first inspired to help children in the | ||
| Amarillo area after noticing young boys hanging around the local | ||
| baseball park instead of attending school; he later learned that | ||
| many of the boys came from disadvantaged households, and he | ||
| subsequently formed the Maverick Club and Kids, Inc., to provide | ||
| the children with access to extracurricular activities, as well as | ||
| food, clothing, and medical services; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In pursuit of his goal of a more permanent sanctuary | ||
| for troubled youth in the community, Mr. Farley secured a donation | ||
| of 120 acres of land from a local rancher in 1938; he began housing | ||
| boys on the property the following year, and on March 14, 1939, Boys | ||
| Ranch received its original charter from the Texas secretary of | ||
| state; the ranch garnered significant statewide and nationwide | ||
| recognition for its efforts over the ensuing years, and by 1947 some | ||
| 100 boys were residing at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Today, with almost three times that number in its | ||
| care, Cal Farley's stands as one of the country's largest privately | ||
| funded child and family service providers, offering residential, | ||
| spiritual, educational, and community-based services at no cost to | ||
| the families; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Thousands of young people from across the nation | ||
| have found hope, opportunity, and "A Shirttail to Hang Onto" at Cal | ||
| Farley's Boys Ranch, and it is indeed fitting to honor the proud | ||
| legacy of Cal Farley's on the occasion of this significant | ||
| milestone; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of Cal Farley's | ||
| Boys Ranch; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the | ||
| Texas House of Representatives. | ||
