WHEREAS, The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley in Pharr has | ||
provided a valuable service to area residents for three decades; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, Established in 1983 as the Pharr Area Food Pantry, | ||
the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley was incorporated in 1986 and | ||
now serves as a clearinghouse to distribute donated, purchased, and | ||
prepared foods through a network of 230 partner agencies to 42,000 | ||
residents per week in Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy Counties; one | ||
of the largest food banks in the Lone Star State, it supplies an | ||
average of 20 million pounds of food to people in the Rio Grande | ||
Valley annually; and | ||
WHEREAS, This nonprofit organization takes part in a number | ||
of worthwhile initiatives as a member of the Texas Food Bank Network | ||
and Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief | ||
organization; moreover, it participates in Feeding America's Kids | ||
Cafe program, which helps ensure that children have access to | ||
nutritious foods; and | ||
WHEREAS, The food bank further serves the wider community | ||
through its Our School Tools program, which provides school | ||
supplies for students at more than 50 elementary schools in the | ||
area; it also works to educate families on the health advantages of | ||
fresh foods through its Healthy Living Program as well as its Valley | ||
Garden Project; and | ||
WHEREAS, With the worthy goal of alleviating hunger, the Food | ||
Bank of the Rio Grande Valley makes immeasurable contributions to | ||
the people of South Texas, and it indeed merits special recognition | ||
for its achievements and service; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby honor the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley and | ||
extend to all those associated with the organization sincere best | ||
wishes for the future; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley as an expression | ||
of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. | ||
