WHEREAS, The citizens of San Benito lost a distinguished | ||
public servant and a beloved member of the community with the | ||
passing of former Cameron County sheriff Omar Lucio on January 17, | ||
2022, at the age of 88; and | ||
WHEREAS, Omar Lucio was born in San Benito on August 19, 1933, | ||
to Armando and Porfiria Lucio; he learned the importance of hard | ||
work, integrity, and service at an early age, and his belief in the | ||
value of education led him to study sociology and criminal justice | ||
at Pan American University and later to obtain a juris doctor degree | ||
from the Reynaldo Garza Law School; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Lucio's exemplary career in law enforcement | ||
spanned over six decades; he was hired by the Harlingen Police | ||
Department in 1962 and rose through the ranks to become captain of | ||
police; he went on to serve as sheriff of Cameron County, a role in | ||
which he benefited the community he loved by utilizing his skills, | ||
knowledge, and tireless commitment to maintaining law and order; | ||
along the way, he furthered his professional development by | ||
graduating from the FBI National Academy, and he was a member of the | ||
Sheriffs' Association of Texas and the National Sheriffs' | ||
Association; widely respected in his field, he strove to share his | ||
wisdom and experience with his colleagues as well as aspiring peace | ||
officers; and | ||
WHEREAS, Sheriff Lucio's contributions extended far beyond | ||
his law enforcement duties; his commitment to community service was | ||
evident through his involvement in such organizations as Leadership | ||
Harlingen, the Harlingen Leadership Steering Committee, the United | ||
Way, and the Knights of Columbus, as well as through his work as a | ||
board member for End of Road Ministry Shelter for the Homeless; he | ||
was recognized for his efforts in behalf of youth baseball with the | ||
dedication of Omar Lucio Field at Victor Park, and the Cameron | ||
County Commissioners Court recently made the unanimous decision to | ||
name the sheriff's department administration building in his honor; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, Sheriff Lucio was a devoted husband to his wife of 70 | ||
years, Nena Lucio, with whom he shared in the joy of raising five | ||
children, Gracie, Patricia, Edna, Omar, and Sarah; he was further | ||
blessed with 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a | ||
great-great-grandchild; and | ||
WHEREAS, Omar Lucio was an esteemed law enforcement | ||
professional, a loving family man, and a pillar of his community, | ||
and those he left behind will forever find inspiration in their | ||
memories of his remarkable life; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Omar Lucio and | ||
extend heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, and former | ||
colleagues; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Omar Lucio. | ||
