WHEREAS, Lieutenant General Robert W. Cone of the United | ||
States Army concluded his command of III Corps and Fort Hood on | ||
April 21, 2011, and he is indeed deserving of special recognition | ||
for his distinguished service; and | ||
WHEREAS, Appointed to oversee III Corps in September 2009, | ||
General Cone demonstrated exceptional leadership while guiding the | ||
Fort Hood community through the events surrounding the tragic | ||
shooting that took place at the base on November 5, 2009; while ably | ||
managing that crisis, he also supervised the unit's vital efforts | ||
in our nation's military operations; and | ||
WHEREAS, Fort Hood is familiar ground for General Cone, who | ||
undertook his first duty as an armor officer there while a member of | ||
the Second Armored Division from 1980 to 1984; he later returned to | ||
Central Texas from 1998 to 2001, holding the posts of division G3 | ||
and brigade commander with the Fourth Infantry Division; and | ||
WHEREAS, This accomplished officer has also proven his | ||
abilities in a broad range of other assignments; his contributions | ||
to major combat operations have included service in support of | ||
Operation Desert Storm in 1991 as part of the 11th Armored Cavalry | ||
Regiment and in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, when he | ||
was part of the CENTCOM Headquarters staff; in addition, he | ||
directed the Combined Security Transition Command--Afghanistan in | ||
2007 and 2008, helping to develop the Afghan National Army and | ||
Police; and | ||
WHEREAS, General Cone's educational achievements include a | ||
bachelor's degree from the United States Military Academy and | ||
master's degrees from The University of Texas at Austin and the | ||
Naval War College, where he was a graduate of highest distinction; | ||
he has further drawn on his education and expertise in such roles as | ||
director of the Joint Advanced Warfighting Program, commanding | ||
general of the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, | ||
and special assistant to the commander of the U.S. Army Training and | ||
Doctrine Command (TRADOC); and | ||
WHEREAS, He is the recipient of numerous commendations, | ||
including the Defense Superior Service Medal with one Oak Leaf | ||
Cluster, the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze | ||
Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf | ||
Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, | ||
the Army Achievement Medal, and the Ghazi Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan | ||
State Medal from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan; and | ||
WHEREAS, For his exemplary service, General Cone has been | ||
promoted to the rank of four-star general and is taking over the | ||
command of TRADOC; at this time it is a pleasure to honor him for his | ||
outstanding tenure at Fort Hood and his ongoing efforts in behalf of | ||
our nation's security; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature hereby honor Lieutenant General Robert W. Cone on his | ||
exemplary service as the commanding general of III Corps and Fort | ||
Hood and congratulate him on his promotion to the rank of four-star | ||
general; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for General Cone as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
