| WHEREAS, Humberto Lozano Lopez, a pioneering figure in | ||
| Spanish-language radio and television, passed away on May 16, 2011, | ||
| at the age of 73; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Robstown, Mr. Lopez got his | ||
| start in broadcasting when he and Hispanic civil rights activist | ||
| Dr. Hector P. Garcia created a 15-minute radio program entitled The | ||
| American GI Forum; Mr. Lopez went on to found radio stations in the | ||
| United States and Mexico, and he moved into television in the 1960s | ||
| by developing one of the first programs in Spanish to be distributed | ||
| throughout the country; his business interests also extended to | ||
| motion pictures as a result of his involvement in creating Spanish | ||
| versions of English-language films, and he sometimes recorded | ||
| voice-overs himself; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Among the stations launched by Lopez Broadcasting | ||
| were Majic 104.9 in Corpus Christi, Majic 95.9 in Victoria, and KLMO | ||
| 98.9 in San Antonio; another enterprise established by this | ||
| resourceful entrepreneur was the Tejano Music Video Network, and he | ||
| played a prominent role in helping build the popularity of Latino | ||
| music artists; in recognition of his far-reaching contributions, he | ||
| was inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame in 2005; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Mr. Lopez was a champion of | ||
| Hispanic civil rights and furthered public dialog on education, | ||
| politics, and a range of other issues; his focus on giving back to | ||
| the community was also reflected in his generous support of | ||
| charitable initiatives and his willingness to use his media outlets | ||
| to raise money for worthwhile causes; he was equally devoted to his | ||
| family, taking great satisfaction in the love of his wife, Minerva, | ||
| and his 12 children; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Humberto Lopez lived his life with vision, | ||
| enthusiasm, and devotion to causes in which he believed, and he will | ||
| be remembered and admired for years to come; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Humberto Lozano | ||
| Lopez and extend deepest condolences to the members of his family: | ||
| to his wife, Minerva Lopez; to his children, Mario, Homer, Larry, | ||
| Manuel, Carlos, Humberto, Ernest, Melinda, Ray, Lisa, and Mary | ||
| Helen Lopez and Mena Lamar; to his grandchildren and | ||
| great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and friends; and, | ||
| be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
| Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Humberto | ||
| Lozano Lopez. | ||
