WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their | ||
memories of Glidden Dean O'Connor, Jr., of Waco, who passed away on | ||
April 17, 2011, at the age of 84; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born on December 17, 1926, in Houston, Glidden | ||
O'Connor graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in 1944 and | ||
promptly volunteered for the United States Army Air Corps; he | ||
served in the Air Transport Command, flying routes in the South | ||
Pacific during World War II; and | ||
WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. O'Connor attended Baylor | ||
University and received a degree in chemistry in 1949; he enlisted | ||
in the U.S. Air Force the following year, serving as a second | ||
lieutenant with the 17th Bomb Wing of the 5th Air Force in Korea; in | ||
1951, while at James Connally Air Force Base, he met Nancy Rohan, a | ||
longtime Waco resident, and they soon married and went on to share | ||
nearly 50 years together before her passing and to welcome three | ||
children, George, Kelly, and Kathleen, into their family; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. O'Connor enjoyed a notable career in the | ||
wholesale supply business as president of the Rohan and William | ||
Cameron companies in Waco and the CertainTeed Corporation in | ||
Pennsylvania, and he was recognized for his professional | ||
achievements in The Wall Street Journal in 1980; he retired in 1988; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan was a member of the board of | ||
directors of the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce and local | ||
chapters of the YMCA, the Better Business Bureau, the American | ||
Heart Association, and the March of Dimes; after his retirement, he | ||
became a Master Gardener, traveled widely, and supported the Baylor | ||
Bear Foundation, the Baylor Alumni Association, and the Baylor Lady | ||
Bear basketball team; and | ||
WHEREAS, A proud patriot, successful businessman, and | ||
devoted patriarch, Glidden O'Connor, Jr., lived a rich and | ||
purposeful life, and he will long be remembered with deep affection | ||
by all who knew him; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Glidden D. O'Connor, | ||
Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to | ||
his children, George Rohan O'Connor and his wife, Sherry, Kelly | ||
O'Connor Scheddel and her husband, Jack, and Kathleen O'Connor and | ||
Loretta Welch; to his sister, Sheila Horne, and her husband, Dell; | ||
to his grandchildren, Amber O'Connor and her husband, James Webb, | ||
Flynn O'Connor and his wife, Jacqui, Caitlin O'Connor, Meggan | ||
McKinzie, Hayley McKinzie, Tamara Hurwitz and her husband, Kevin, | ||
and Amy Johnston; to his six great-grandchildren; to his close | ||
friend and companion, Tyla Oswald; and to his other relatives and | ||
friends; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Glidden | ||
D. O'Connor, Jr. | ||
