| WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw of the Nueces County | ||
| Sheriff's Office lost his life in the line of duty on September 10, | ||
| 1877, and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In September 1877, Deputy Sheriff Shaw and an | ||
| assistant rode to Brooks County to arrest a man who was wanted for | ||
| selling stolen hides; Deputy Sheriff Shaw rode in the back of a | ||
| wagon with the prisoner, his wife, and their two children on the | ||
| return trip, and while the party was stopped in Banquete, someone | ||
| stabbed the deputy to death; the prisoner's wife claimed the deputy | ||
| was assaulted by a party of armed men, but her husband was later put | ||
| on trial for the murder; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the | ||
| courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as | ||
| Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw, who willingly place themselves in | ||
| harm's way each day to safeguard the lives and property of their | ||
| fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of | ||
| Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw of the Nueces County Sheriff's Office. | ||
