R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The city of Leander is celebrating the 40th
  anniversary of the Leander Police Department with a "40 Years of
  Service" event on March 10, 2018; and
         WHEREAS, On January 21, 1978, the people of Leander voted to
  incorporate their community, and on April 3 of that year, the city's
  first law enforcement agency was created with the appointment of
  Cecil D. Hill as chief city marshal; a few months later, the office
  of city marshal was abolished, and Mr. Hill was named Leander's
  first chief of police; and
         WHEREAS, In the years since, Leander has grown from a small
  rural town of 300 to a thriving city of more than 42,000, and the
  police department has kept pace, moving from its original portable
  building to several locations before settling in a new facility in
  2007; today, the current chief, Greg Minton, oversees 50 sworn
  officers and 15 civilian employees; and
         WHEREAS, Thanks to the dedication and expertise of its police
  department, the city of Leander has been named one of the Top 50
  Safest Cities in Texas and the Top 100 Safest Cities in America by
  such online venues as SafeWise.com, ValuePenguin, and
  NeighborhoodScout.com; the department has also been commended by
  the National Association of Town Watch for its participation in the
  National Night Out program, and several of its officers have been
  honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving; and
         WHEREAS, The men and women of the Leander Police Department,
  both past and present, have worked tirelessly to preserve peace in
  the community and to protect the lives and property of their fellow
  citizens, and their record of service is indeed worthy of
  recognition; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 40th
  anniversary of the Leander Police Department and extend to its
  officers and staff sincere best wishes for continued success with
  their important work; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the Leander Police Department as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
