||
WHEREAS, The Lamar County Crime Stoppers organization is
celebrating the 25th anniversary of its founding in January 2011,
which coincides with the annual observance of Crime Stoppers Month
worldwide; and | ||
WHEREAS, Lamar County Crime Stoppers is a nonprofit
corporation that held its first meeting on January 30, 1986; the
organization relies on cooperation between the police, media
outlets, and the general population to gather information about
crimes and criminals; an important focus of its work is the fielding
of tips on criminal activity, which can be reported online and by
phone; the secure services operated by Crime Stoppers protect the
anonymity of the information providers and encourage potentially
reluctant witnesses or community members to share what they know;
and | ||
WHEREAS, Governed by a civilian board, Lamar County Crime
Stoppers is funded by private donations from concerned citizens and
businesses; the group has paid out some $275,000 in rewards, and
information received by the organization has led to the arrest of
more than 1,800 criminals, the clearing of some 3,400 cases, the
recovery of over $2 million in stolen property, and the seizure of
drugs worth nearly $860,000; beyond the numbers, however, the
success of Lamar County Crime Stoppers can perhaps best be measured
by the community's increased awareness of illegal activity, the
greater willingness of residents to fight back against crime, and
improved communication between police, the media, and those who
live and work in the area; and
WHEREAS, The impressive record of proven results established
by Lamar County Crime Stoppers is a testament to the strong bonds of
collaboration it has fostered, and all those involved in this
worthwhile initiative may take immense pride in its many
praiseworthy achievements; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
Legislature hereby recognize January 2011 as Crime Stoppers Month
and honor Lamar County Crime Stoppers on the 25th anniversary of its
creation; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Lamar County Crime Stoppers as an expression of high
regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
