WHEREAS, A caring and purposeful life drew to a close with the | ||
passing of James Thomas Cain of San Antonio on November 28, 2021, at | ||
the age of 80; and | ||
WHEREAS, The son of Telford and Lucile Cain, Jimmy Cain was | ||
born in Rosenberg on June 13, 1941, and he grew up with the | ||
companionship of two sisters, Carolyn and Kay; a talented | ||
trumpeter, he played in the band at Plainview High School, and he | ||
went on to attend The University of Texas at Austin, where he | ||
participated in the Goldman Trumpet Trio, the Symphony Band, the | ||
Symphony Orchestra, and the Longhorn Band; during his time at UT, he | ||
met the love of his life, Virlie, with whom he shared a fulfilling | ||
relationship of 56 years; and | ||
WHEREAS, After a brief tenure as a teacher in San Angelo, | ||
Mr. Cain was drafted into the U.S. Army; he studied at the Naval | ||
School of Music in Virginia, and he played trumpet at military | ||
functions across the U.S. and throughout Europe; returning to | ||
civilian life, he served as a teacher at Cole High School before | ||
embarking on a 36-year career as a band director at Stevenson Middle | ||
School; he retired from education in 2012; and | ||
WHEREAS, A respected leader in his profession, Mr. Cain | ||
served as a clinician and adjudicator for band competitions | ||
throughout Texas for 25 years; he was also an adjudicator and | ||
coordinator for American Classic Music Festivals, and he was a | ||
member of the Texas Bandmasters Association as well as the Texas | ||
Music Educators Association, where he played an active role on the | ||
Region XI board; among his many accolades, he was inducted into the | ||
Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame Class of 2017 by the Alpha Chapter of | ||
Phi Beta Mu; and | ||
WHEREAS, A dynamic educator and gifted musician, James Cain | ||
enriched the lives of innumerable people, and he will forever hold a | ||
special place in the hearts of those who were privileged to know | ||
him; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of James Thomas Cain | ||
and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be | ||
it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jimmy Cain. | ||
